Functional Physical Therapy

Creating Wellness focuses on therapies and modalities that work with the body's innate recuperative potential.  Our efforts are placed on how to assist and guide the body to heal as efficiently as possible.  Some of those therapies are outlined below.

Manual Therapies - Soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release techniques, instrument assisted myofascial release techniques (IASTM), passive and active ROM techniques, manual traction, manual lymphatic drainage, etc. may be used to decrease pain, break up restricted myofascial tissue such as scar tissue, move tissue fluids to reduce edema, and relax muscle tension.

Therapeutic Procedures - Therapeutic exercises may be implemented to increase muscular strength, endurance and/or flexibility.  Other neuromuscular therapies may be initiated to re-educate muscle movement patterns, improve balance and other neurosensory based skills.  Therapeutic activities, such as MEA techniques, are commonly used to improve a global functional performance such as bending, lifting, carrying, reaching, transitioning, etc.  Additionally, it is common that we employ the use of kinesiotape to assist in the above therapeutic activities.

Modalities - While standard procedures such as mechanical traction, electrical muscle stimulation, hot or cold packs, TENS, etc. may be occasionally used, it is more likely that we incorporate more alternative modalities such as Anodyne therapy, ReBuilder stimulation, Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM), Low Level Cold Laser, light therapies, electrical or laser based accupoint stimulation, pulsed EMF, etc. to assist the body in the healing process.

Functional Movement Analysis - The focus of our rehabilitative recommendations will be based on the principles of functional movements, meaning the movement that is required for your body to operate appropriately in real-life circumstances.  It does not focus on pain or aesthetics, rather how your body works dynamically and fluidly to achieve the physical tasks of daily life.  Stability is key, for which mobility can be granted around a stable structure, to safely and effectively move and function.

Functional Movements & Physiotherapy

MEA straps work by creating a sense of stability.  Neurologically, this sense of stability can immediately decrease the protective muscle tension and pain.  With this new neurological perceived sense of stability, exercises and functional movements can be performed in previously painful movements so that a new pain free movement pattern can overwrite the old painful pattern.

The MoveWell Functional Movement Analysis is utilized to identify dysfunctional movement patterns of the neck, shoulders, thorax, lumbopelvic and hip regions.  If a faulty movement pattern is identified the proper sequence of mobility and stabilty techniques can be prescribed to fix the abnormal movement. These programs are available online via secure patient login for instruction through our partnership with MoveWell University.  If you have already had your functional movement screening click here to login to MoveWell

The M2T Blade is an instrument assisted myofascial mobility tool that is utilized to locate and treat myofascial adhesions.  The goal when utilizing the  M2T-Blade is to break up adhesions and to cause microtrauma to the region.  This is done  to re-initiation your body's natural inflammatory healing response to modify scar tissue and fibrosis that is causing the restriction. The region can then be appropriately stretched and mobilized to help attain pain-free movement.
